Point of Sale (POS) Cables and Kits

The SNIPER PC-Based DVR system has a Point of Sale (POS) integration feature that inserts text from a cash register into the video of a connected security camera. This is done by sending text data from the register to the 9-pin serial port (aka the RS232 “Com Port”) on the SNIPER DVR system. With the right cables and adapters, you can have up to one register per video camera.

There are two main ways to get text from the register to the 9-pin connector on the SNIPER DVR: aSerial Splitter and a Direct Connection.

A Serial Splitter will split the text from an existing serial receipt printer, allowing text to go to both the printer and the SNIPER PC-Based DVR system at the same time. Whatever prints on the printer will also appear on the video window. This is especially useful if the cash register cannot support a 2nd printer, or if all of the serial ports on the register are already in use. It is also convenient because it requires no special register setup. Note that the serial splitter will only work on a serial port, and NOT a parallel port! Be certain of your port type before attempting to split it. Also note: a serial port may be 9 pins, which requires a 9-pin splitter, or 25 pins, which requires a “triport” splitter.

A Direct Connection simply requires a cable connecting the SNIPER PC-Based DVR to a free serial port on the register. This is especially useful if there is no receipt printer, or if the receipt printer does not use a serial port. In any case, the register must be specifically set up to use a serial port to send text to the SNIPER PC-Based DVR, usually by designating a receipt printer on the appropriate port.

POS Connectors and Cables

9-Pin Serial (RS232) Com Port Every SNIPER PC-Based system has at least 1 Com Port built in (some have 2). Additional ports may be added as an option when you order your system. Note: If you have some PTZ cameras, one com port on the SNIPER PC-Based DVR will be needed to control your cameras as well.

Basic POS Cable Kit The basic kit can be used alone to establish a Direct Connection, or in combination with a Serial Splitter. The basic kit includes a 100’ cable, various POS Integration connectors, and a USB to Serial Port adapter (used for adding additional serial ports to a SNIPER unit).

9-Pin Serial Splitter This splitter is needed to split a 9-pin cable to both a serial printer and the SNIPER DVR at the same time. It includes a small extender cable to help with installation. Requires the Basic Kit.

25-Pin “Triport” Serial Splitter This splitter is needed to split a 25-pin cable to both a serial printer and the SNIPER DVR at the same time. It includes a small extender cable to help with installation. Requires the Basic Kit.
